Buying guide

How networking & hardware is bought

What agencies usually ask for

Networking and server hardware is bought on a refresh cycle, for a new building or site, or because capacity ran out. End-of-support dates, expiring warranties, and wireless standards moving on are the usual prompts. The lines most often requested are access and core switching, wireless, and rack servers for virtualization or specific applications.

How this category is licensed

Hardware is only part of the price. Switches and wireless carry software subscriptions for management and advanced features, and every device carries a support contract priced per device per year at a chosen response tier. Configuration drives cost more than the model name does: port counts, power over Ethernet budgets, uplink speeds and optics on the network side; cores, memory, storage layout, and controllers on the server side. Lead times vary by product and matter for planning.

What to have ready for a quote

Site count and the ports needed at each, PoE requirements, uplink and optic types, server specifications, rack and power constraints, the support tier and term you want, and existing support contracts so new devices can co-term with them. The consolidated quote lists hardware, optics and cables, software subscriptions, support, and installation as separate lines.

Typical combinations

A switch refresh with wireless and multi-year support is the standard site project. A pair of servers with a backup target and support covers a small virtualization footprint. Staging, configuration, and installation can be quoted with the hardware or handled by your own team.

What moves the price most

Port density and PoE budget on switches, the optics and cabling a design needs, the software subscription tier, and the support level and number of years. On servers it is memory and storage configuration rather than the chassis. Quantity matters too, so a phased refresh is often quoted as one order with staggered delivery to hold pricing across the phases.
